Ephemeral

For this interactive piece, I was tasked with curating an immersive workshop experience for a class of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

After learning that light was a vital source of communication, I photographed—through a wine glass—a composition of various light sources, including standing lamps and strings of fairy lights. Through the glass, I was able to capture mysterious movements, patterns and textures and fleeting hues of light. To further the sense of movement, I then used a photo editing app to animate the compositions.

Inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors, I used projectors to cast the animations onto the four walls of a recreation room. The students were then instructed to draw what they saw and how they felt immersed in such an environment. Although unable to film the workshop itself, I recreated the experience using paper figurines. Added soundtrack: “The Righteous Wrath of an Honorable Man” by Colin Stetson.
